What to wear in Northern Ireland: Are you wondering what to pack for a trip to Northern Ireland? We've got you covered! While the notoriously tempestuous weather may give even the most seasoned traveler pause, this guide will help make your packing efficient and stress free!

There's a saying in the British Isles that goes something like "don't like the weather? wait 5 minutes and it will change!" Our own years living and traveling in the United Kingdom have certainly proven that to be true! Depending on the season the weather is pretty likely to change several times throughout the day. It might be rainy and chilly in the morning, sunny and warm by the afternoon, and then back again. Our packing guide relies on layers that you can repurpose throughout your trip!

What is the weather like in Northern Ireland?
The good news about packing for a trip to Northern Ireland is that the weather doesn't shift in extremes. While the summers are warmer, with temperatures reaching up to 75 degrees F (though they average in the mid 60s), the winter temperatures don't often drift too far below freezing.
In the summer I recommend planning for weather ranging from the high 50s to the low 70s. In the winter plan for 40s into the high 50s. Fall and spring fall somewhere in between and change from year to year.
One thing that you can depend on is the rain. With an average of over 180 days of rainfall per year, chances are that some of your trip is going to be wet. The good news is that while it does rain frequently, in our experience is rarely truly pours. Rain often comes in light to moderate mists and stops and starts throughout the day, without sustaining very long.
What should I pack for my trip to Northern Ireland?
Layers are going to be your best friend on any trip to the British Isles, especially in Northern Ireland!

For Hiking and Outdoor Activities
Layered shirts and tops.
We do a lot of activities when we're in Northern Ireland and let me tell you that hiking with young kids can certainly make you sweat, even in cooler temperatures. Plus, even in the coldest months most pubs and restaurants are toasty. This is why we recommend wearing a cami or short sleeve shirt that is topped with a lite, easily removable layer such as a flannel button up or sweater.
Rain jackets and warmer layers.
Waterproof jackets are a must in Northern Ireland. I personally recommend going for a lighter jacket so that if it's raining but not too cold you can still use it without getting too hot. Better to have the waterproof and remove a sweater layer.
We also love packing insulated and/or fleece vests. They keep you warm but not too hot and really pull an outfit together.
Trousers and pants.
Jeans and leggings are great for outdoor activities in Northern Ireland. I recommend bringing pants that you can tuck into your socks or that don't drag on the ground which will get them wet.
Footwear.
We definitely recommend prioritizing comfort and durability when it comes to footwear in Northern Ireland. Depending on your itinerary I highly recommend bring some comfortable, water resistant boots or sneakers with good traction. If you venture out to sites like the Giant's Causeway this is going to make a world of difference.
White bright sneakers won't last long in Northern Ireland's rugged environment, so we recommend saving those for when you're out and about in the cities and towns.
Recommendations:
Our kids both have this pair of Merrell Hiking Boots that they absolutely love.
Tom loves his Columbia Men's Suede Waterproof Hiking Boots and Elizabeth has the Columbia Trailstorm Peak Hiking Shoe which are super comfortable.
For Belfast and other Cities.
When visiting Belfast and other Northern Irish cities you can mostly wear your typical "going out" clothing, with a few caveats.

Dress in layers.
When we first moved to Belfast in the winter I would often wear huge sweaters to stay warm on the walk to the pub only to melt once we'd gotten inside. Pubs and restaurants are often kept at toasty temps so we recommend wearing something light underneath. A dress with a slouchy sweater or heavy jean jacket that can be easily removed works great!
Footwear.
On a night out in Belfast you will see footwear ranging from dirty old sneakers to the highest of heels. But even in the city center there are rough walking areas with cobblestones and plenty of puddles.
Depending on how far you plan on walking, I tend to recommend flats, cute sneakers or boots/booties with a chunky block heel rather than stilettos. If you're wanting to go a bit more formal consider hiring a cab to drop you off right where you want to go.

What to pack for your kids in Northern Ireland?
Much of the above information applies for kiddos as well as adults. You'll want to dress them in comfortable layers, with a waterproof option. I highly recommend getting them some quality, water resistant shoes with good traction, particularly for hiking and exploring. This will allow them to climb and jump and adventure without you worrying that they're going to slip and fall or soak their socks.
*Tip* We also recommend always packing a change of clothes, or at least a change of socks, for your kids.
